Zo’n 235 mensen die op de verkiezingspoll gestemd hebben zorgen er eigenlijk voor dat er bijna geen coalitie mogelijk is die op langere termijn geen problemen geeft. Een linkse coalitie (SP, PvdA & Groenlinks) komt uit op zo’n 49%, en de huidige coalitie (CDA, VVD, LPF) komt niet verder dan 23%. Ik hoop dan ook niet dat dit een voorbode is voor de uitslag van vanavond, al zullen de SP-ers onder jullie het daar niet mee eens zijn.

Dutch lower house elections are coming, and nothing shocking has happened so far, until recently.

Hans Smolders, EenNL's candidate for the lower house, spread a manipulated photo of GroenLinks candidate Femke Halsema through e-mail. The GroenLinks party is shocked by this action.

The photo shows a naked, hairy woman with the head of Femke, above it it shows the text "Let nature have its way". Smolders, former driver of murdered politician Pim Fortuyn, sent the photo to several friends and colleagues, accompanied by smileys and "greetings from Hans".

The only thing GroenLinks wanted to comment on the photo is that the photo isn't Femke Halsema (duh).

• I suspect you've already tried Frank Taylor and Barry Hunter's very nice overlay combo of NASA's Blue Marble imagery and global weather. If not, do check it out.
  
  Earlier, Frank wrote "This is the kind of thing Google should implement built-in to GE." Yes and No, I think. There is no reason for Google to duplicate the efforts of dedicated amateurs, but there is every reason for Google to make available more such user-generated content in the default layers. In this way, Google can play the role of government, fulfilling those tasks not easily taken on by individuals. For example, I think that the Google Earth Community BBS remains too bewildering for more mainstream users, and that these users especially need to be nudged towards the best user-generated content. Another role for Google: providing content that is difficult to scale up by individuals, such as 3D textured buildings and high resolution height meshes.
• The Virtual Earth 3D plugin is now up to version 1.1, fixing the bug where only PCs localized for the US were able to connect. There is no need to download it again if it already works.
• Microsoft Research's MapCruncher 3.0 is released. (Version 3.01, out Nov 20, fixes a problem with transparency in PDFs). MapCruncher is a PC application that lets you marry points on your overlay with points on the underlying map, to create an accurate combined map The link to the tutorial for version 3 is still dead, but the the tutorial for version 2 gives a very good idea of how it works — look, no code! I've found that it is easier to be accurate with MapCruncher than with Google Earth when placing overlays — and MapCruncher also works with the Virtual Earth 3D API.

• Spiros has written an CPAN perl module that acts as an API for the Geograph.org.uk database of user-contributed photos of every square kilometer of the British Isles. Nestoria, a UK property search service, incorporates Geograph into their search results: Click on "Pics" under local information.
• What's next for GeoIQ's heatmaps, blogged here last week? Well, it depends on you, say the developers. Support for Google Earth is the top request.

Jordaanfestival, succes met veel hindernissen..
Naar aanleiding van de ontmoeting op het Jordaanfestival werd deze week de afspraak ingelost voor een ontmoeting met de organisator Jan de Bie en een deel van zijn team. Anne Lize van der Stoel, Frans Beishuizen en Huub Verweij werden gastvrij onthaald in de ‘huiskamer van Amsterdam’ zoals het restaurant voor die gelegenheid was omgedoopt door de Bie.

College laat voortijdig schoolverlaters aan hun lot over
Inzet van dit college is ‘vasthouden en niet loslaten’ - zo wordt op hoogdravende toon vermeld in het programakkoord van PvdA en GroenLinks. Met dat doel werd deze zomer een convenant met de minister van Onderwijs getekend waarin als doel werd opgenomen aan het einde van het schooljaar 2006/2007 het aantal voortijdig schoolverlaters met 10% te verminderen.

Algemene beschouwingen in gemeenteraad
Vandaag zijn in de gemeenteraad de algemene beschouwingen gehouden. De VVD stelde onder meer voor om een Amsterdams canon te maken, het Nationaal Historisch Museum naar Amsterdam te halen en verder werd onder meer het College in een motie gevraagd om te lobbyen voor het binnenhalen van de start van de Giro d’Italia en de Tour de France en het kandidaat stellen van Amsterdam als Europese culturele hoofdstad in 2018.

Amsterdam -- In order to promote bicycle use, newly naturalised people should be offered a cycling course. In addition, well-known Amsterdammers might ride a bicycle in order to serve as a role model. Fatima Elatik, alderwoman in Zeeburg, has recently joined the cycling community.

Many members of ethnic minorities want to learn to ride a bicycle. New fellow countrymen and women should be offered a cycling course instead of the Delft blue statue they are now given at their naturalisation ceremony, suggests Yasmien Kaddoer of the Akros social welfare organisation in de Baarsjes.

Westerpark alderman Dick Jansen recently criticised the naturalisation ceremony for being a Â'strangely bombasticÂ' and Â'very un-DutchÂ' party that he finds highly embarrassing. However, he does think that a cycling course for the newly Dutch would be a good idea, he told News from Amsterdam today.

In addition, he finds it important to show that cycling is not a sign of poverty, but a smart and economic mode of transportation. Â"Role models such as a cycling mayor or queen are therefore more than welcome. Or even better: cycling colleagues such as Aboutaleb, Marcouch or Elatik!Â"

Elatik (photo) has always been known for having no problems with adapting to Dutch society, but refusing two things categorically: to go camping in a tent and to ride a bicycle. However, asked to comment, she says that she actually does ride a bicycle now. Â"The GroenLinks [Green Party] council members had a big laugh; I was the last person they expected this fromÂ".

A year and a half ago, Elatik received threats. Since that time, she has been feeling insecure in public spaces and has been travelling by car as much as possible. Â"Increasingly, I felt like I was losing contact with realityÂ".

A month ago she made a decision and bought a foldable bike, which she can take along in her car if necessary. She likes cycling a lot: Â"It is good to be outdoors after a day at the office, and it is also good for my blood circulation. Only it should not rain!Â"
